Step 1: Preventive Maintenance
Good maintenance includes keeping soil from entering your building.
Soil that makes it into your building will be most visible and damaging to
your carpet in high traffic areas such as entrances, elevator lobbies and
corridors, doorways and paths between furnishings.
• Keep outside areas clean
• Use soil barriers such as walk-off mats
• Protect desk areas by using chair pads to prevent crushing from chair
• Designate areas for eating and drinking to minimize spills
• Maintain HVAC system
Step 2: Regular Vacuuming
Vacuuming is the most important dry soil management procedure.
Effective vacuuming removes dry soil so that it cannot spread to other

Step 3: Remove Spills and Stains
Although spills are inevitable, permanent stains do not have to be.
Most stains can be avoided or removed by immediate, or at least same-day, treatment.
• Have spot cleaners, stain removal products and equipment on-hand
for immediate use.
• Treat spills quickly with spot cleaners
• Basic stain removal process - Blot away spill, apply cleaner, pat in the
cleaner, wait three minutes, blot again and then rinse and blot to dry
Step 4: Proactive Periodic Deep Cleaning
Even the most effective, consistent vacuuming may leave some soil
behind. Periodic deep cleaning improves appearance, removes oily,
