WINNER DOES ALL • Long a designing force, Jane Thompson is
recognized for the depth and breadth of her lifetime achievements
On a late summer afternoon, jane thompson, arguably the most accomplished design generalist working today, sits at a mid-century George Nelson roll- top desk in her brick-and-glass South Boston office. With a career that spans more than 60 years, she has been writer, editor, museum curator, design consultant,
urban planner, and restoration developer, a participant in some of the most
significant design projects of the 20th century. Now in her early 80s, she is
principal of the architecture and planning firm she founded in 1994,
Thompson Design Group, where she continues to steadfastly work in the
field that has defined her as much as she has defined it. “What is design?”
she muses. “It’s what brings life to your senses.”
in her boston office, Jane Thompson works surrounded by such iconic
mid-century pieces as a George Nelson rolltop desk, Aalto stools, the Albini
rattan chair that Benjamin Thompson, her late husband and former
architecture and design partner, always favored, and a light he designed.
