keted the night sky, which is something easily forgotten living
in the city. Nestled at the base of two major ski lifts and adjacent to Canyon Lodge, we were greeted by the friendly staff
at the Austria Hof Lodge.
Tastefully decorated with European alpine furnishings,
the Austria Hof was the perfect choice because of its central
location to everything we wanted to experience while visiting
Mammoth. After a refreshing night’s sleep, I made my way
downstairs for the continental breakfast. What I found fascinating was all the different European dialects that were being
spoken around me while I was sipping a warm cup of joe and
savoring a tasty Danish pastry. It seems the Euros are wise to
our beautiful national park system too.
VISITING THE LOCALS
As with any bike trip outside your regular area, it’s a good
idea to visit local bike shops to get the latest scoop on pop-
ular nearby trails. The Wave Rave shop immediately caught
my attention with their impressive lineup of e-bikes displayed
in front of their shop. For years the shop’s primary focus
was their line of rentals for snow use, but last summer they
decided to expand the rental business to accommodate the
outdoor adventurer in the summer months.
The shop first started with a small fleet of e-bikes last year
before tripling their fleet this year. Most of the shop guys are
core snowboarders and were never really into cycling before
they expanded their e-bike rental offerings. One guy mentioned he got into it while he was nursing some injuries from
snowboarding last season.
While most of the off-road singletrack trails around
Mammoth’s upper main lodge are closed to e-bike usage,
there are many that are permitted within the downtown area
to explore the backcountry. There’s still plenty of fire roads
and bike paths abound with majestic views in every direction.
Wave Rave offers a variety of different bikes from Haibike
and Izip. One of their popular e-bike rental models is the
Izip Sumo. The popularity of this bike is its versatility. It can
pound out miles of bike paths while being very capable of
off-roading the sandy trails of Mammoth as well.
It’s difficult to not stop and enjoy the breathtaking views of Mammoth.
The Austria Hof provides guests with European charm by bringing Swiss Alps decor to America.
