f you’re a subscriber to RACER, we hope
you enjoy this special bonus issue of the
magazine, courtesy of our friends at SRT.
It showcases the motorsports and road
car activities of Chrysler Group’s SRT
brand – in particular, the mighty Viper.
Every generation needs a hero, so they
say – but in our opinion, it also needs a
front-engined supercar! It’s a format that
naturally lends itself to powerful, sexy
and timeless shapes. That’s why, for
instance, Ferrari’s GTO is still held up as
a paragon of automotive art.
We feel that the latest Viper is certainly
a triumph of matching voluptuous form
with muscle-packed function. If you
were to buy one simply to gaze at it,
we’d understand – we did plenty of that
when a GTS test car first rolled into the
RACER parking lot (ABOVE). Thankfully,
your typical Viper owner bought it to enjoy
it on the move and isn’t afraid to get out
their and explore its potential – hence the
GTS’s adaptive damping for the track and
the Time Attack limited-run version.
Of course, the Viper’s most extreme
workout comes courtesy of the folks
at SRT Motorsports. They launch into
the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar
Championship with a (coil) spring in their
step, having won a race and finished third
in the American Le Mans Series GT
Teams’ Championship in the Viper’s first
full season back in sports car racing.
With the best of the ALMS and Grand-Am
Rolex Series now under one roof, we’ll see
two versions of the SRT Viper in action
this year, with factory GTS-Rs fighting for
GT Le Mans honors and the new, privateer-friendly GT3-R racing in GT Daytona.
The GTS-Rs will again travel to France
to race in the 24 Heures du Mans, while
other Chrysler Group favorites like the
Dodge Charger and Avenger will compete
in NHRA drag racing. And SRT’s street
model range continues to expand, with
new developments of the Challenger,
Charger, 300 and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
2013 was an exciting year for the SRT
brand. In 2014, the stakes get higher.
