The arrival of custom powertrains for the
second season of Formula E could split
the grid, according to Mahinda Racing
chief engineer Vinit Patel.
Eight different all-electric powertrains
will be represented across the 10-team
field, with two teams – Team Aguri and
Andretti – having opted to remain with
last year’s McLaren-built eMotor.
Patel believes that those who have
taken advantage of the opportunity to
develop their own units will be rewarded
with better performance, although he
still expects close racing.
“If you took them to a test track and
tried to measure the performance
difference, the season two-spec cars
should be a good half-second up the
road,” he told RACER. “Maybe more. But
on the day, I think the results are going to
be fairly mixed up, and it’s still going to be
an exciting championship for everybody.”
BUILDING A BETTER (E)MOTOR
The powertrain regulations have been
opened up for the second Formula E
season, and most teams have capitalized
on the chance to develop their own motors.
Bloodhound SSC revealed a near-complete car on
Sept. 24, including the 6.5ft tail fin required for
high-speed stability. The carbon fiber monocoque is
mated to a titanium, aircraft-style rib and stringer
section containing the jet engine and rockets.
