FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT/PUBLISHER, THE NIELSEN PHOTO GROUP
Welcome to the State of the Industry issue of Rangefinder. The following pages include dozens of helpful tips, new products and advice from fellow photographers—this is
definitely an issue you’ll want to keep in your archives. And I can’t think
of a better way to stay up-to-speed on the state of the industry than
by attending our trade shows. Next up is the PDN PhotoPlus Expo,
which will be held in New York City, October 24-27. It’s not too late
to register! If you are considering attending, or if you’re already joining us, I’d like to point out two aspects of the Expo that are especially
designed for wedding and portrait photographers. On Wednesday, October 24, WPPI (Wedding
and Portrait Photographers International) is presenting WPPI University, a one-day conference
including seven seminars. A couple of highlights I’m looking forward to seeing include Denis
Reggie’s presentation “Get Real: A Case for Authenticity in Wedding Imagery,” and my friend
Bambi Cantrell’s updated seminar, “Posing & Lighting for Weddings,” which is always a favorite.
In addition to the seminars presented on Wednesday, you’ll want to take a close look at the track
of seminars under the title “Shooting Memorable Moments,” held on each of the remaining days
of PhotoPlus (Oct. 25-27). This is just the tip of the iceberg of what you can see and learn about at
the Expo. Speaking of icebergs, one of my very favorite photographers and social activists, James
Balog, will be giving a Keynote presentation on Saturday, October 27, at 12 p.m. His presentation
will include the screening of Jeff Orlowski’s 2012 documentary, Chasing Ice, which features Balog’s work, and has won top honors for cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival. Attendees
are sure to leave this event inspired to shoot great images, no matter their specialty. Our other
keynote speakers are legends in the industry as well: Stephen Shore will be speaking and showing
work on Thursday, October 25, at 12 p.m., and we are honored to welcome David LaChapelle
at PhotoPlus this year, where he will present at noon on Friday. Lastly, on Thursday night we are
hosting a very unique party—join us for the annual PhotoPlus Expo Bash at Madame Tussauds
legendary wax museum in Times Square. Tickets are available though www.photoplusexpo.com.
As always, I love to hear from readers. Feel free to call or e-mail.
